What is creativity? According to dictionary.com, the definition is:

The ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.; originality, progressiveness, or imagination.

That’s pretty broad and pretty cool. The ability to go beyond. To create. To imagine.

Creativity fuels our society and our soul. When we are creative, we come up with new and different ways to do things. We break the status quo and allow for greater expansion.

But not everyone likes change. Actually, most people don’t like change.

Does that mean some people are more creative than others? Does it mean some people embrace creativity and others try to stifle it?

We are all born with an innate sense of creativity. We naturally want to explore and push the boundaries.

As a young child, we want to stand when we can only sit, and we want to run when we can barely stand. We try new things and ask questions to learn.

Some of us continue to question and push the boundaries. While others learn to be fearful and forgo the risks and rewards of adventure.

All of us are creative. I know, I used to think I was not creative. I didn’t write stories, draw pictures, or play musical instruments.

Creativity exists in many forms

It was at work that I finally realized I was creative. I had to come up with innovative ideas for solving problems. I also realized that being creative in the kitchen counts. Each time I created a meal with what ever I could find in the fridge, I was using my creativity.

I recognized I was the most satisfied when I used and expressed my creativity. It gave me confidence in my ability to add value and to make a difference.

Creativity is an essential part of life. We can think of creativity in many different ways. We sometimes think creativity comes from artists or inventors, but creative ideas can come from anywhere and in any endeavor.

We all need a way to create and build and expand. That’s what life is all about.

What about you? How do you express your creativity? What do you enjoy doing?

Think about these questions and if you are not happy with what you are doing, permit yourself to be creative.
