This morning on my early walk I noticed the birds singing. Now that’s not unusual at this time of year, but the quietness was. No car, train or airplane noise. Usually at this time of morning it’s the beginning of the early commute for people.

Sounds are especially important to me and I’m pretty sure it’s because of the many years spent on a bicycle. I can tell the size and speed of a vehicle coming up behind me based on the sound of the engine or motor and the tires on the pavement. Sounds tell me how close they are from the approaching loudness of the vehicle and noise the tires make as they roll over imperfections on the road I just passed. Yes, eyes are important, but your ears will save you from making a critical error.

On the walk this morning I was more attentive to sounds than I typically am, probably because I don’t get out much yet. Today the birds seemed to be particularly loud. Robins. Humming birds. Crows. Blue Jays. They all added to an interesting morning song. They were doing their thing, but it was so peaceful to hear them go about their business.

It was fitting music for the trees showing their transient, spring color.
