Are you happy now?
Most people are happy at least some of the time. It seems to come and go without giving it much thought as to how it gets there or where it goes. With happiness, you don’t notice it’s gone until later when you realize you’re no longer happy. You’re like “Wait, how did I get here? What happened to the happiness I felt this morning, or yesterday, or last month”.
There are all kinds of self-assessment tools available that claim to tell you if you’re happy. As we discussed in previous posts, happiness is personal and subjective. You don’t need someone else to tell you if you are happy or not. Only you know if you are happy.
The question is, are you happy now? ‘Now’ is the keyword. Take a moment, right now, to see if you are happy. Close your eyes and feel. What comes to mind? What feelings pop up.
If you feel happy, that’s great! Even if you had to hunt through your feelings for it, that’s excellent. If you don’t feel happy, excellent.
“What?!?,” you are probably saying. “But I didn’t pass the test. I’m not happy!”
The only way to change something is first to know it’s something you want to change. Now that you know you aren’t as happy as often as you want, you can do something about it. That’s wonderful news.
Try to picture a field of flowers, a beach or a mountain vista – something that could cause you to smile. Is it bright and happy? Can you feel it? Do you feel happy now?
If you do, great, you’ve gone from not happy to happy just like that. If not, stick with me. We will have fun as we both explore the power of choosing to be happier.
Peter, I love that you offer the path to happiness as one of personal discovery in the moment, and that every moment can be different than the last. And that learning how to become happier can be fun – even if you aren’t happy right now. 🙂
Thank you, Connie
