Yesterday I watched the Super Bowl as I’m sure many of you did. I was looking forward to ‘getting out’ and being part of the world again. We went to the grocery store (still not driving) to get our regular grocery items, but this time it was supplemented with chips, dip, and many other items good for a party. This party was just the two of us and the dog, Allister. It was going to rain in the afternoon and we had a wonderful long walk in the morning. It wore both of us out and the dog had no more pee left for his ‘spotting program’ by the time we got home.
We recorded the pregame show, game and post game show. Normally I wouldn’t be so keen on watching hours of stuff related to football, but this time it was different. I’m housebound except for walking the dog and I haven’t watched much football this year. I’m a Broncos fan and I missed the Super Bowl last year because I was in Cuba. Havana had some of the game, but I could only understand the announcers in the background speaking in English to hear what was happening. This year I knew nothing of the other teams, other than the Patriots are the nemesis of the Broncos, but I was looking forward to learning more about the teams, the half time show and, of course, the commercials.
It was early in the pregame when there was a segment on Leah Still, daughter of Devon Still, a pro football player with the Bengals. It was suddenly, weird. Here was a segment of how his daughter had fought cancer and moved past it. Suddenly I realized I was now in the same category. Sure you recognize it, but this was a moment when it hit home that it may have been me in the bed getting chemo or radiation therapy.
How powerful we are to be able to move beyond such a debilitating illness. Yes, I now count myself in the legions who are beating cancer and moving on to be even more productive and creative in our lives.
