Okay, I’ve been on the bike once in 2 months and after a 30 minute ride I’m already noticeably sore one day later! That was my first reaction yesterday when I got back on the bike for a, hopefully, 45 minute ride. Fortunately it didn’t last long, mostly because the music helps to distract me.
Today it took longer to get out of bed. Actually the dog woke me. Maybe that extra 15 minutes on the bike yesterday took me down for another hour or two of sleep. If that’s true, then I may be sleeping a lot more the next couple weeks.
The upshot of getting up later was to walk with all the kids as they head to school. The tricky part was walking and maneuvering amongst the branches, leaves, and various other organic material that’s blown off the trees as the kids on bikes ride toward me. As a cyclist I can see how the dirty shoulders present a challenge, but add a much younger person riding with a pedestrian and dog (Allister and me) and you have the recipe for a real mess. Fortunately there are several places the dog and I can jump out of the way.
My joy today was seeing the smiles and enthusiasm the kids had maneuvering amongst the material in their pathway. A really good reminder for me when I’m out to appreciate the challenges I encounter on the bike. Or, in life for that matter.
