Why I Use the Hawaiian Prayer When I’m Confused
When things start to spin sideways in my head, I have two go-to tools.
The first and most useful is to redirect what I’m thinking about to “What do I want?” Almost any situation can be dramatically shifted when I stop thinking about what is and lightly focus on how I want the situation to turn out.
Sometimes, I’m not ready to think about what I want. Maybe I’m hurt or I’m mad. My mind is not open and I’m too distracted.
That’s when I use the Hawaiian Prayer.
The prayer is four incredibly simple statements:
- I love you.
- I’m sorry.
- Please forgive me.
- Thank you.
I’ve found that saying these statements, has calmed me down and helped me focus unlike anything else.
I don’t say the statements out loud or to anyone in particular (even if it seems that someone, in particular, is the source of my hurt or anger). I say them to myself and to the Universe. I just put them out there without attachment.
But just saying the words without connecting with the emotional side does not work as well. As I go through the four statements, I’ll usually get a shiver down my spine with one of them.
That shiver tells me I’ve struck a nerve and found a pocket of resistance that needs attention. I then focus on that particular statement more intently by repeating it over and over again. As I repeat the statement, I try to feel both the emotional energy I’m sending and what I’m receiving from the Universe.
I highly recommend using the Hawaiian Prayer when you feel stuck. It’s crazy effective and so simple to use. You can do it during a meeting or when you wake up at 3:00 in the morning. When you use the prayer, you’re directing it towards yourself and what you’re feeling.
The story behind the prayer is fascinating. It was started by Dr. Hew Len in Hawaii and he used it to help ‘cure’ a whole hospital full of criminally insane people.
Here is a video from Joe Vitale that summarizes it nicely.

If you want to dig a little deeper, the link below is the first in a series of nine videos from Dr. Hew Len himself that gives a better and more comprehensive appreciation of where he and the prayer come from.

Great advice about this strategy for re-shaping our perceptions of the world and other people. I’m especially fond of this musical version by Carrie Grossman

Trying to memorize them. Get pretty mixed up
