Are You Miserable Because You See All That You Don’t Have?
Are you always focused on what others have and you don’t? Do you wish you could live a different life than what you have today?
We all do this, but the difference between those who are working towards what they want and those that don’t is where they focus.
Defeated individuals look at what they don’t have, winners, are always moving toward what they want. It’s that simple.
The challenge comes in the consistency with which you stay on track toward your goals and your desired future.
How do you get and then stay on track?
Setting out a vision for yourself is the first step. Spend some time with yourself to get real with what YOU want and not what you think you want. As a quick reminder check out our earlier post: https://youcanchoose.info/looking-ahead-into-a-murky-2021
Once you’re comfortable with the vision for your future, staying on track to achieving that vision is where it can get to be challenging.
I have a simple tool I use to keep myself focused. I use it again and again throughout the day. I will ask myself, especially when I’m not happy or frustrated in some way,
‘Am I paying attention to the gap or am I focusing on what I want?’
This question is so helpful because it enables me to refocus on what I want and not get distracted by other things that jump in front to take my attention away. When you’re down and it feels like things aren’t going your way, you’re susceptible to thinking poorly of yourself. Feel your frustration or whatever emotion is there, but move past it. Don’t ruminate. Choose to refocus on your vision of where you want to go.
It seems pretty simple, but the magic is when you do it over and over again, you build new thinking habits. Over time, you begin to see how your thinking has begun to shift your life incrementally. Each small shift you make builds to eventually show up as the life you want to live.
Every day you have the ability to choose from moment to moment. It is in recognizing the small choices you make that you begin to build for that big amazing future you’ve always wanted for yourself.
You get what you focus on, so practice focusing on the good things you have and what you want, not on the things in your way or that you don’t have.
